All the questions you had about getting a massage but didn’t know whom to ask.

Massage therapy can be relaxing and rejuvenating. But it can also be stressful. This isn’t just the case with those of us going in for our first massage therapy session but also those of us who go for it regularly.

A massage is a very intimate activity. Walking into a spa for the first time can therefore be very intimidating. Your mind is filled with all sorts of questions of what is acceptable and what isn’t.

In comparison, a massage therapy session at home can be a lot less intimidating because you are in the comfort of your home. Even so, you are bound to have a lot of apprehensions around massage etiquette. Thankfully, we have answers to all the questions you may have around massage therapy.

Should I undress for my massage therapy session?

Some massage therapies require you to strip down to your undergarments because these include essential oils. Some others are what are referred to as dry massages which is to say there’s no oil, just pressing of the pressure points. For these, you need not be undressed. If you are unsure about what massage you’ve opted for, ask the therapist before they begin.

All Urban Company massage therapists will offer you a disposable undergarment for your therapy session. You can choose to wear that or wear one of your own. In any case, your private parts will be covered with a cloth, so you don’t feel exposed.

If you’re wearing your undergarment, ensure that it’s fresh.

What if I am conscious about my body?

It is perfectly normal to feel awkward about stripping before a stranger. But know that massage therapists are trained to be non-judgemental so know that when you do take off your clothes, you are in a judgement-free zone. The entire idea of the session will be to help you relax. Know that you are in a safe space.

Should I take a shower before my massage therapy session?

Yes. While it may seem like a chore, you could do well with a shower before your massage therapy session. This is especially true if you’re opting for a sports massage. Showing up fresh to your session is a basic courtesy you can extend to your therapist. If you’ve opted for a foot massage, make sure you wash your feet and dry them completely before your therapist arrives.

What can I expect at my first massage therapy session?

Each spa has a different set of protocols for their massage therapy sessions. An Urban Company massage therapist will first seek your permission to set up their massage table in your home. They will then proceed to light essential oils and play relaxing music to create a spa-like ambience.

Following this, they will check if you have any health conditions and what specific aches and pains you are hoping to resolve with the session. They will then take you through the different parts of the session and show you what oils they are using. If your massage involves stripping down to your undergarments, they will offer you a disposable one.

Once they begin the session, they will check if you’re ok with the pressure and adjust it basis your response. It is absolutely essential that you be completely honest in your responses to make the most out of your session. If you feel the pressure is too much, alert your therapist immediately. The idea is to not complicate the one thing that is supposed to be relaxing.

Can I use the bathroom during a massage?

It is best if you visit the washroom before you massage but if you’re going to hold it in, you’re not making the most of the massage therapy session. So, don’t hesitate to ask your therapist for a time out for a washroom break.

What if I pass gas during a session?

Admittedly, this can be awkward however, passing of gas is one of the ways in which your body can react to a massage. It can be involuntary so you can simply apologise and move on, or you could excuse yourself to a different room. Again, it is advisable to visit the washroom before your massage therapy session to avoid mishaps like this. But should it happen, don’t dwell on it too much.

What if I’m ticklish?

Again. The best thing to do here is to let your therapist know. Urban Company’s massage therapists are trained to put you at ease and help you relax.

What if I fall asleep during a massage therapy session?

If you fall asleep during a massage therapy session, chances are your therapist will take it as a compliment. A massage is supposed to help you relax. If you’ve fallen asleep mid-session, a therapist will likely see this as a job well done!

Remember, when you book a massage therapy session from Urban Company, you will be assured of a trained therapist whose only job is to help you unwind and resolve any physical ailments they can with the massage. The more you speak to your therapist, the better they will be able to service you and help you relax. And yes, don’t forget to thank them at the end.
