Handyman & Painter

I’m extremely disappointed with my most recent Urban Company experience. This was my fifth time using UC, and unfortunately, three of those five experiences have now been negative. I booked a handyman for 30 minutes to hang two picture frames and, if time allowed, make a small adjustment to cabinet doors that we had already installed but that looked slightly uneven. The experience started poorly almost immediately. After arriving, the handyman saw that our master bedroom door was open and noticed a ladder stored behind a shelf inside the room. Without asking whether I had a ladder he could use, or asking permission to enter the bedroom, he simply walked down the end of the long hallway, entered our master bedroom, and took the ladder himself. I found this very intrusive and inappropriate. A service professional should always ask before entering a private room in someone’s home. I then explained the work in order of priority: first, hang a medium picture frame; second, hang a small picture frame; and only if there was time remaining, take a look at the cabinet doors. Both frames were lightweight and already wired and ready to hang. His immediate response was, “You know you only booked for 30 mins, right?” The tone felt dismissive. I told him I was fully aware and explained that the cabinet was only an optional task if time remained. I had previously booked a UC handyman for 45 minutes who managed to hang a large mirror and install a ceiling light with time to spare, so I did not think my request was unreasonable. He then told me that I was required to provide my own screws for picture hanging. This was confusing because the Urban Company website indicated that screws would be provided. He initially said UC policy was that screws were not included, although he eventually found two screws in his own box that worked for the medium frame. I had to provide a screw myself for the smaller frame. There were also several moments where time seemed to be unnecessarily wasted. He stopped to sharpen his own pencil using a blade, even though I offered him an already-sharpened pencil that I had used to mark the wall. He refused to use it. I had already marked where the smaller picture should go, but the final placement was still off from the mark. I chose not to make him redo it. He also didn’t acknowledge that it was definitely away from my marking on the wall. After finishing the frames, he slowly packed his things away even though there were still approximately seven minutes left in the booking. He made no attempt to even look at the cabinet doors or assess whether the adjustment could be done within the remaining time. The most inappropriate part happened at the end. He told me I needed to open the app and “complete” the booking. I told him I had never been asked to do that before, but I opened the app in case the process had changed. When I showed him the booking on my phone, he reached over and put his finger on MY phone screen in an attempt to select a 5-star rating for himself. I immediately pulled my phone away and asked what he was doing. He responded that it was “not for giving him money.” I obviously understood that. The issue was that he was attempting to rate his own service using my account and my phone without my permission. That is completely inappropriate and seriously undermines trust in Urban Company’s rating system. He left without apologizing. I’m honestly shocked by the level of unprofessionalism displayed during this booking — entering a private bedroom without permission, arguing about basic materials that the website suggested would be provided, making dismissive comments about the booking time, not using the remaining booked time, and most seriously, attempting to give himself a 5-star rating from my phone. I also tried to find a customer service phone number through the Urban Company app and website afterward and could not find one, which made the experience even more frustrating. After five bookings, with three of them resulting in poor experiences, I’m now questioning whether I can trust Urban Company going forward. I hope UC takes this complaint seriously, particularly the attempt by a service professional to manipulate his own customer rating.
