Wall panels are an excellent way to give your home a quick makeover. Here are all the different types of wall panels and how you can use them.

Decorative wall panels can transform your wall in all kinds of unexpected ways. A panelled wall can be an accent feature or a visual relief to your room’s design. It could also conceal construction flaws or hide exposed wiring and serve as an additional layer on the wall, making it long-lasting.

Different types of wall panels

Wall panels are the hottest new way to give your room a facelift. They’re easy to install, comparatively inexpensive, and a great addition to your room’s décor. Wall panels come in different materials – from laminates to wood and MDF to PVC and beyond.

The different types of wall panelling materials include:

Laminate Finish Panels

Laminate Finish Panels

Laminate finish wall panels are a great way to infuse colour, texture, and pattern into the interiors. Laminate is a synthetic material available in various designs that can simulate the look of wood, leather, fabric, and stone, to name a few. In this example, a chequered wall panel in dual colours makes an accent feature in the living room. One drawback is that laminate tends to chip and should be used only in the low-traffic areas of the home.

Wood Panels

Wood panels infuse warmth and offer a rich and elegant look to the decor. These panels can be broadly classified into solid wood panels and engineered wood panels. In this living room, the wall panel incorporates linear strips of wood, while the storage cabinet matches the wall panelling to create a harmonious composition.

MDF Panels

MDF, or Medium Density Fibreboard, is an affordable material that mimics the look of natural wood. Elegant patterns, designs, and textures can be created via CNC machines on the MDF. In this bedroom, a geometric pattern is created in the accent wall behind the bed with MDF panels in a peach colour to offer a young and vibrant look.

PVC Panels

Also among the different types of wall panels are PVC panels. PVC panels are lightweight, affordable, moisture-resistant, and highly suitable for moisture-laden areas like the kitchen and bathroom. They are available in various designs, textures, colours, and finishes. In this example, the slatted PVC panel is used as wall cladding. It incorporates a pair of floating shelves with strip lighting that exudes a warm glow and imbues a tactile quality into the interiors.

Upholstered Panels

Upholstered Panels

Upholstered panels have emerged as one of the trending wall panelling materials that lend a luxe vibe and soften the overall look of the interiors. The tufted panels can be designed in natural and synthetic fabrics like Polyester, Leather, Jute, Velvet, cotton, linen, and more. In this bedroom, see how the upholstered wall panel starts from the floor and touches the ceiling in soothing hues of blue. This type of wall panel cleverly enhances the vertical height of the bedroom and simultaneously functions the headboard.

Glass Panels

Glass Panels

Glass panels perfectly fit contemporary spaces as their reflective surface bounces light and offers a bright and airy look to the interior space. In this example, glass is used as the kitchen backsplash and emerges as an easy-to-clean surface that imparts a modern look. Note that glass panels can be plain, tinted, lacquered, or frosted glass and can be incorporated into different areas of the home.

Mirror Panels

Mirror Panels

Mirror is one of the most exciting types of wall panels that can create an illusion of space. Here in this living room, the rectangular mirror panels behind the sofa feature a sleek grid that amplifies natural and artificial light while providing a sense of spaciousness. Mirror panels can also be used in the wardrobe shutters and the entrance foyer to give it a more oversized look and create the illusion of extra space.

Wainscoting

Wainscoting

Wainscoting is among the most exciting types of wall panels. Wainscot is a traditional type of wall panel that covers the lower portion of an interior wall or partition. It serves a decorative and protective purpose and is typically crafted from boards or wood. Wainscoting not only provides wall protection but can also conceal any existing wall damage and is highly suitable for homes with small children or pets.

Brick or Stone Veneer Panels

As the name suggests, brick and stone veneer resembles the look of actual brick and stone, infusing an earthy, organic vibe into the overall interiors. These panels are much easier to install than traditional stone and bricks and infuse a rustic look.

Metal Wall Panels

Metal wall panels are available in materials like steel or aluminium and offer a sleek and contemporary interior look. These panels are highly durable and moisture-resistant but are prone to scratching. Metal wall panels can be used as a backsplash for the bar, on the furniture, or integrated into the bathroom décor.
