We cleared out the clutter, and picked the BEST and ONLY details you need to know.
At first look, it might seem like fashion-icon-cum-actress Sonam Kapoor had a traditional wedding. Dressed in a red lehenga with mehendi applied all the way to her elbows and adorning heavy jewellery, Sonam danced non-stop with family and friends like any bride would.
But as you get into the details of the big fat Kapoor-Ahuja wedding, you’ll begin spotting unconventional, fresh and unique ideas.
From the bridal looks to the decor, small personalised details to food that looked SO good, there was a lot to love about #SonamKiShaadi.
I. Intimate At-Home Mehendi Ceremony
You know how brides like to get their Mehendi done at home, amidst close friends and family? That’s exactly what Sonam did by hosting a small ceremony at her Mausi’s Bandra house in Mumbai.
1. The Bridal Look
Outfit
We LOVED her outfit – it’s perfectly light for a Mehendi at home, and the colours are anything but run-of-the-mill.
She wore a beige, soft grey and peach Anuradha Vakil sharara, to which the Ahmedabad-based designer added a border that belonged to the bride’s mother.
Jewellery
Also note how she did NOT wear floral jewellery, a trend that seems to be followed by almost every single bride out there on her Mehendi day! Instead, she just picked a pair of gorgeous earrings to perfectly complement her outfit.
Makeup & Hair
Simple twisties in her hair (Sonam’s favourite go-to hairstyle!) with a middle-part and soft waves completed her Mehendi Hairstyle. The makeup was minimal, which is just right for a home Mehendi ceremony.
2. The Groom’s Complementary Mehendi Outfit
We loved how Anand Ahuja, the man behind Bhane and VegNonVeg, wore a rose pink sherwani (soft colours, just like his bride!) and coordinated by picking a greyish-lavendar pocket square to match her lehenga.

3. Bridal Mehendi Design by a Top Mehendi Artist
Veena Nagda is one of the most famous mehendi artists in India, so obviously, Sonam chose to get her intricate mehendi design applied by the best in the business! The
popular lotus motifwas incorporated into the lovely mehendi design.

4. The Cute PJs the Bride Changed Into After The Function
Definitely made for a great photo-op!

II. Big Mehendi Bash
A lot of brides do this, and you should consider it too – get your own Mehendi done a day earlier, so that on the day that your guests are getting Mehendi applied, you can walk around and have fun chatting and dancing with them. If you get your Mehendi applied at the same time, you might not be able to enjoy the festivities as you’ll be stuck on a chair for a long, long time!
1. The Insanely Gorgeous Bridal Look!
Outfit
Considering Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla are one of Sonam’s favourite designers (and vice-versa from what we hear!) – the bride wore a multi-panelled lehenga to her Mehendi that took their team 18 months to create! Multi-panelled lehengas (as well as tassels on her dupatta!) are a big wedding trend, and her lehenga had panels of different pastel hues (the colour difference is more evident in the next picture).

It was simply GORGEOUS.
Makeup & Hairstyle
Namrata Soni, another favourite of Sonam’s, is one of the top 3 bridal makeup artists in India. Of course, she did Sonam’s makeup on all the functions, and we love the pink pout and winged liner she gave the bride. We also strongly suspect that the Mehendi hairstyle, with mogras running across a long messy braid, will become a wedding trend this year!

The jhumkas and maang tika were smashing! As was the peacock kaleerey the bride chose to wear!

2. The Groom’s Outfit With A Hint of Quirk
Anand wore a white and gold outfit as well, but what made it special was the diagonal striped pattern on his jacket and kurta’s collar and piping!

3. The Offbeat White & Gold Mehendi Theme!
Think Mehendi and you’ll imagine bright, bold colours. Sonam & Anand opted for a white and gold Mehendi instead. The decor AND the dress code – everything was part of this theme. And what a refreshing theme it was!
The decor for all the functions was created by Rani Pink Love, a Delhi-based decor company. There were plenty of reflective elements throughout the venue, including rows and rows of these customised bunting and white mogra flowers everywhere!

Don’t miss the
cute elephant mehendi design
on the groom’s hand! Groom mehendi design idea you can share with the man in your life?
4. Contemporary Desserts for the Guests!
While endless types of halwas are there at any decently big sized Indian wedding, Sonam Kapoor went for an endless array of western desserts for her guests! A dessert table by Le15 looked gorgeous with macaroons, cupcakes, brownies and tarts (hungry yet?)

But wait, there was more! Bombaykery, a Gurgaon-based bakery, served yet another long list of modern desserts to the guests, including churros, banoffee jars and live waffle counters! Yum! We wish more couples start incorporating conventional bakery desserts at their weddings. It’s not just the kids who enjoy these, you know? 🙂
III. The Anand Karaj Wedding
There was a morning Anand Karaj ceremony at Sonam’s Mausi’s Bandra home, and the things we loved the most were the decor, the bridal makeup, and the Anamika Khanna lehenga Sonam wore AFTER the main ceremony!
But before we get into it, we need to address THIS –
https://www.instagram.com/p/BiggkYVnyRT/?utmsource=igembed
During her big bridal entry, the actress was walking under a dupatta used as a phoolon ki chaadar. We wish someone from the bridal gang had read our
Phoolon Ki Chaadar tipsthat we’d just published that morning! They would’ve known that you, ideally, shouldn’t use a chaadar like this without a supporting frame because, well, exactly this happens. The bride could not be seen while she entered since the brothers didn’t realise how to hold the piece of cloth properly.
Now that you know what NOT to do, on to all the wedding details!
1. The Decor!
Rani Pink Love created a beautiful watercolour backdrop for the main wedding ceremony.

Watercolour backdrops and Bar Palladio-inspired decor are probably going to blow up as the next big wedding trends!
2. Bridal Makeup That Complements The Jewellery
There’s plenty going on with the wedding look – the bright red, the gold embroidery, the guttapusalu neck piece layered with a choker and that big
Matha Patti. Namrata Soni, the makeup artist, wisely chose to go for an almost no-makeup look (just
like Anushka Sharma did!) so that the focus stayed on the bride’s statement matha patti.

So, how does Namrata Soni describe
Sonam Kapoor’s bridal makeup look
? According to an interview on Vogue India, she said they went for “an almost non-existent eyeliner in black, individual lashes just to open up the eyes and gave it some drama, soft peach cheeks and a beautiful red stained lip—a tinted one.”
3. Unusual Lehenga Designer Choice
Sonam has a very public love for Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla and Anamika Khanna. But on her wedding day, the designer surprised the world by choosing to wear a traditional red and gold lehenga by the reclusive Anuradha Vakil. Little did we know, though, that Sonam had decided Anuradha was the person who’d create the most important outfit of her life almost a decade ago!

Anuradha Vakil is an Ahmedabad-based designer, and according to
this article, Sonam discovered the designer and her work pre-Sawariya and had told her she’d get her wedding lehenga designed from her back then. Lo and behold, once her wedding was fixed, she went down to Ahmedabad to place the order!
Although we loved that Sonam went for an “heirloom piece”, it’s way more traditional than any of us had imagined what the fashionista would wear on her big day.
4. Personalised Footwear (And Flats Only For The Bride!)
Sonam Kapoor is Sonam Kapoor, after all. So she got her Jimmy Choo wedding shoes personalised with a cute “A <3 S” message.
We really, really, really liked how she wore flats on every single wedding ceremony. Comfort is so important!
5. Wedding Favours
Speaking of flats, the wedding guests went back home with juttis from Fizzy Goblet (a footwear brand all us millenials lust after!)
The personalised message reads, “Here’s a little something to share our joy. Hope you had a wonderful day with us. With love, Kapoor & Ahuja Family.”
Once again, the couple went contemporary and picked a modern, trendy brand like Fizzy Goblet to give their guests a thoughtful gift!
6. The Blush Pink Lehenga She Changed Into After The Main Ceremony
OMG.
We went nuts trying to find a full-length clear image of what looks like a really pretty Anamika Khanna lehenga!

But this is all we could find. Anamika Khanna herself has shared these very images on her Instagram! If anyone has a full-photo, we’d love to see it!
7. A Wedding Cake With Chocolate Frosting and A Dash Of Humour!
Le15 Patisserie Chef and wedding guest, Pooja Dhingra, created this cake the couple cut just after they were married. The cake topper will make you smile, and it’s nice to see how cream frosting wedding cakes are back!

The 2-tier wedding cake had the couple’s wedding hashtag #EverydayPhenomenal piped onto it as a personalised touch!
IV. The Grand Reception Party!
The morning ceremony was followed by a big star-studded reception evening at Leela hotel in Mumbai. Sonam wore a chevron lehenga, and then changed into a white outfit to dance the night away. Which means the bride had a grand total of 4 outfit changes on one single day! Yes, let that sink in first.
1. Unique Bride & Groom Outfits

Sonam Kapoor finally got into a fashionista-level chevron-pattern lehenga in shades of ivory, grey and silver! It was an Anamika Khanna lehenga.
Her groom looked dapper in his sherwani, but what everyone was talking about was the sneakers he paired them with! While everyone’s split about their opinion on this, here’s what we think. Men have been wearing formal suits with sneakers for years now, so world, this was inevitable.
2. The GORGEOUS 7-tier Wedding Cake!
This was a work of art created by Pooja Dhingra of Le15 Patisserie. There are, literally, no other words to describe it.

3. The Fourth Outfit Change in 24 Hours!
Like we mentioned earlier, Sonam changed into a super-comfortable white Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla dress so that she could dance the night away on her Reception!

And finally, we’re leaving you with this picture that sums up Sonam’s wedding perfectly – Big Bollywood Stars. Comfortable Bride. Endless Dancing.
UC Out.
