But before we begin, know this: dark skin tones can wear any lipstick color they like, especially red. In fact we wear it quite well! The trick is to find the shades that make us look our best.

Range: Colorbar Velvet Matte Red Lipstick

I’m going to start the list with my personal favourite. Colorbar was the first brand that , I felt, had my dusky skin tone included and catered to. There are two specific red lipstick selections that I often recommend, one of them is this blue red lipstick shade by the name of ‘Check Mate.’ It looks beaut on dark skin with cool undertones. I know it looks dark but actually this red is bright enough to be worn comfortably during the day. Top it off with a super shine gloss for the evening.

Type of Red: Blood red lipstick
When I saw this red lipstick shade, I thought of all my friends with cool nutty skin tones in almond, chestnut, walnut, and espresso. The purple undertones in this blood red shade compliment cool undertones, while the dark red color goes hand in hand with the skin color. I’d say it works well for the night as well as the day.
Range: Lakme 9 to 5
Type of Red: Blue red lipstick
I won’t call myself a fan of Lakme. At times I have found their lip colors more suited for light and medium skin tones, while I struggle to find the best red lipstick shade for dark skin tones. Still, there are a few good options that work well on dusky Indian skin, like this muted red lipstick with plum hints. It’s a good day-wear option for cool-hued skin tones.

This red lip color is as bewitching as the city it takes inspiration from. A lush wine red lipstick shade, this is the perfect choice for cool dusky and dark skin tones. I’d save this one for date no. 3, ladies!

My second Colorbar recommendation is for warm skin tones. The Deep Red lipstick shade is actually an orange red lipstick. It has this lovely coral tinge that brings out the glow on someone with a golden undertone. Save this bright red lipstick for an evening out.

When a shade takes inspiration from a dusky beauty like Rihanna, you know you can wear without a care in the world. More orange than red, this metallic lipstick shade could be the highlight of your Saturday night. If you’re a warm skin tone, that is. Cool skin tones stand a chance of looking ashen with this red lipstick shade, and can opt for the Copper Rose (it’s a pink lipstick) in the same range.

You can see me wearing this shade in the post on the Best Red Lipstick Shades for Indian Skin Tones. So trust me when I say that warm dusky Indian skin tones can wear a coral red lip color! It blends in well with buttery yellow undertones of the skin, and adds a splash of color to the face.
Range: Wet n Wild Red Lipstick
Type of Red: Orange red lipstick
Tanned to dusky skin tones with yellow undertones should consider buying this bright red lipstick shade. The matte finish gives a touch a subtlety to a pop color like this, in case you want to wear it during the day. If you plan to wear this lipstick in the evening, I’d suggest a topping it up with gloss.
Range: Sephora Cream Lip Stain Liquid Red Lipstick

I love this red color! Red Velvet is to Sephora, what Ruby Woo is to MAC, and Red for Me is to Maybelline (not available in India yet). It is a true red lipstick shade that suits almost all Indian skin tones, especially dark skin complexions. The red lipstick itself has a neutral undertone i.e. it is a perfect balance between a dark red shade and a light tint, which makes it suit one and all.

Just like the Sephora Red Velvet on this list, MAC’s Ruby Woo is another neutral red that suits most Indian skin tones. And when good things are available in small packs and prices, (the Mini MAC of course!), there’s little wonder why it is the most popular red lipstick shade out there.

On the other hand, I’d recommend this NYX shade to golden and yellow undertones. This is because even though Madrid is rich neutral red, on close look it does lean, ever so slightly, towards a brick. So some cool dark skin tones may end up looking pale and ashen.
