Everything you need to know about body polishing but didn’t know whom to ask.

The skin is the body’s largest organ. And yet we tend to ignore it and don’t take as good care of it as we should.

If we just described you, body polishing is the spa treatment you need. Today!

Body polishing is an excellent skin-softening treatment that pampers your skin and helps it look and feel refreshed. Not sure what’s involved and how it works? Read on to find out all about this relaxing and rejuvenating treatment before you opt for a session at the salon or at home with Urban Company.

What is body polishing

Body polishing is a beauty treatment for your entire body. It is a luxurious way to pamper your skin, and have it look smooth, radiant and healthy. Think of it as a facial for your body.

As part of the treatment, the spa professional uses body polishing products to exfoliate the skin, removing dead skin cells, dirt and other impurities that could be clogging up your pores.

They will then use moisturising products to give you soft, supple, and smoother skin. The products used in body polishing vary depending on the type of treatment you opt for, but they usually consist of a body polish and a nourishing lotion or body oil.

What are the benefits of body polishing?

  • Exfoliation
  • Unclogs pores
  • Cell renewal
  • Improves hydration
  • Prevents ingrown hairs

Exfoliation

The products used in a body polishing treatment gently exfoliate your skin, removing dead skin cells. This helps in revealing fresh, new skin cells, giving your skin a smooth, radiant look. Exfoliation also stimulates blood flow and boosts circulation, thereby enhancing your overall body glow.

Unclogs pores

No matter how often we cleanse our skin, oil, dirt, sweat and other impurities accumulate and clog up our pores. Which can in turn cause breakouts and skin inflammation. Body polishing helps to unclog your pores, getting rid of the impurities and giving your skin a chance to breathe.

Stimulates new cell growth

Old skin cells that have not shed can make your skin appear dry, dull and rough. Also, the cell renewal process (the shedding of dead skin cells and the development of healthy new cells that make their way to the top layer of the skin) decelerates as we age. Through exfoliation, body polishing nudges the cell renewal process, by gently sloughing off dead skin cells and helping healthy skin cells come to the surface. The end result in even-toned, smoother skin.

Improves hydration

Now that your pores are clear and healthy new cells have come to the surface, your skin will find it easier to absorb any skincare products that are applied. Products like moisturisers and body oils are able to penetrate deeper into the skin, replenishing moisture and enhancing their effectiveness in reducing fine lines and wrinkles. The increased hydration will leave your skin supple and well nourished.

Prevents ingrown hairs

The gentle exfoliation also helps in preventing ingrown hair. Dead skin cells and impurities can clog hair follicles, causing ingrown hair. By removing the dead skin build-up, body polishing helps ensure that your hair grows the way it is supposed to — out of your skin, not curving around and back into the skin.

What is the difference between a body polish and a body scrub?

The key difference between a body polish and a body scrub is that a body scrub cleanses and exfoliates your skin, while a body polish concentrates on exfoliating your skin, moisturising it and preparing it for further treatments, typically a detoxifying treatment, like a mud bath or seaweed wrap.

When it comes to texture and ingredients, a body scrub has exfoliating agents that tend to be more abrasive in nature. It has a higher ratio of exfoliants to moisturising ingredients. A body polish, on the other hand, elevates the exfoliating experience, by deeply hydrating your skin as it has a higher percentage of moisturising ingredients. That is why body polishing is often likened to a facial for the body.

What should you expect from a body polishing treatment?

There are various types of body polishing treatments available, like an uplifting sugar body polish and glow enhancing polish. Pick a treatment that suits your requirements and discuss your needs beforehand with the spa therapist. Mention any healthy or skin-related issues you might have.

The steps involved in a body polishing treatment are the same, whether you are getting it done in the salon or at home by a professional therapist from a salon services company. Before the treatment begins, the therapist might ask you about which products you prefer and give you a choice of essential oils and scents. You then lie down on the massage table, the therapist covers you with a disposable sheet, and gets to work.

For the exfoliation, the therapist will uncover individual parts of your body, one at a time, ensuring your modesty. The treatment typically starts with a warm body oil that is massaged into the skin. It is followed by a body polish that is rubbed gently, but firmly, into your skin. The therapist will use long strokes and circular motions to rub the body polish onto all parts of your body to exfoliate it. Next, the therapist will rinse off the body polish or, if you prefer, you can take a quick shower. This is followed by a relaxing massage that relieves muscle tension and puts your whole body at ease.

What to do after body polish?

After an exfoliating treatment like this, it is important to keep your skin well moisturised. Avoid using soaps for at least a day after the treatment to minimise skin irritation and dryness. Instead opt for moisturising bath oils and body washes. Remember to use a sunscreen and avoid exposure to sunlight, sunbathing and saunas for at least day or two as your skin will be sensitive.

How often should you do a body polish?

It’s important to not do body polishing treatments too often as they are rigorous. Frequent treatments can lead to over exfoliation, which can lead to skin sensitivity, irritation and redness. You can opt for a body polishing treatment once every six to eight weeks.

Avoid body polishing or any type of exfoliation if you have sensitive skin. Do a patch test with the body polish before applying to you whole body. Also avoid the treatment if you have cuts, sunburn, or open sores.

To wrap it up

If you are looking for a treatment that gives you healthy, smooth, radiant skin, then a body polishing treatment is a great solution as it has a host of benefits and doesn’t need to be done too often. Whether you do it at a salon or at home, this treatment effectively rejuvenates your skin, making it soft, supple and glowing.
