This post discusses all about male pattern baldness and the various reasons that cause hair loss in men. It also covers tips which will help one determine how to stop hair fall for men.

What is male pattern baldness and why does it happen?

  • Male pattern baldness is a type of hair loss in men which starts with thinning hair from the scalp of men.
  • It is also known as androgenetic alopecia and occurs with age due to changing hormone levels.
  • Men who have close relatives with baldness are at a higher risk.  Thus, genetics play a major role in this condition.
  • Balding in men can begin as early as one’s teenage years, but occurs more often once they become adults.

How does male pattern baldness happen?

  • As each strand of hair on your head has a growth cycle and age, when one falls, new hair grows in its place.
  • Male pattern baldness weakens this growth cycle and causes hair follicles to shrink, leading to finer and shorter strands of hair.
  • Eventually, it reaches a point where when there is hairfall in men, it isn’t replaced by new hair growth. And this gradually leads to baldness.
  • It can occur all of a sudden or gradually. Some types of hair loss are temporary, while others are permanent.

Symptoms of Male Pattern Baldness:

  • The most common type of hair loss in men begins with gradual thinning hair at the temples or the top of the head.
  • It can start with a single bald spot or a receding hairline.
  • The hairline often recedes in an “M” shape.
  • In some men, the hairline continues to recede until most or all of their hair is gone.
  • In some types of balding, people have coin-sized bald patches.
  • It can happen after a physical or emotional shock
  • Handfuls of hair may come out when combing or washing your hair or even after gentle tugging.
