It’s a given that every child loves food. But when your love of food begins to impact your health as an adult, what do you do?
Meet Jasleen Kaur, a professional dietician who’s helped almost 200 people turn their lives around. What most people don’t know is that Jasleen herself was an overweight teenager who struggled for over a year before she finally won the battle with obesity. Read on to know the full story.
An adolescent girl typically has 3 best friends- chocolates, ice cream and, of course, cola. Unlike most college-going girls, I was never conscious about my weight or my food habits. Eventually, by the time I was 20, I weighed 95 kg. It’s true that being fat is a vicious cycle- you put on weight, nothing fits and you don’t look good anymore, so you eat some chocolates to make you feel better, and then of course you put on some more.
In my world, healthy food was my enemy and junk food was my best friend.
Gradually, my friends and family started commenting on my weight. My sister was petite and slim, whereas I was obese- the comparisons were inevitable. When this happened, I would feel an urgent need to hide, leave or change the topic immediately. My weight had become an embarrassment to me. I could never be in any conversation that was related to weight.
Each time I looked in the mirror I would say, mirror mirror on the wall, I am not fat at all.
One day, my father made a particularly harsh comment about my weight. He was adamant that I would either lose weight, or leave the house. It changed my life- that day, I made a commitment to myself that I would stop letting food rule my life. From 95 kgs to 60 kgs the journey of a healthy dieter began.
Initially, I started going on early morning walks. I also began reading as much as I could about nutrition and healthy eating. Obviously it wasn’t easy; there were several times when I cheated on my diet, but I didn’t give up on it. Eventually, the walking turned to jogging and then, running. I learned to keep a check on what I was consuming; when I would eat outside with family or friends, I would struggle to stick to my grilled chicken. Slowly, but surely, I started losing weight.
By this time, nutrition had become a passion. I started studying nutrition and dietics at a renowned institute in New Delhi and completed my B.A.M.S in alternative medicine and science. When I graduated, I knew I wanted to spend my life educating people about health and nutrition. It’s become the mission of my life- I’ve also conducted various seminars and now have a clientele of over 200 people, in India and abroad as well.
As someone who’s experienced this journey, and who can relate to those people who are presently struggling with weight loss, I believe you need to make a healthy diet one of your top priorities. Make a healthy diet plan for 6 days a week and make sure you stick to it. Then, on the 7th day, give yourself a cheat day to reward yourself. It won’t be a quick fix, but you’ll definitely start feeling better about yourself.
Ultimately, diet has to be a representation of what you will be eating your entire life. Eating correctly should be your lifelong commitment and diet should be a reflection of this commitment.
