There is no dearth for Engineers and Doctors in the country. But try looking out or the best graphic designers, you would realize that the field hasn’t been exploited much. The need for creativity and a passion for designing are pre-requisites for being a graphic designer and fortunately or unfortunately, we have people who can be numbered on fingers lined up for you.
If we look behind a little, Binoy Sarkar was the torch bearer of designing when he designed the logo for Airport Authority of India and Indian Airlines. A generation later came R.K. Joshi whose notable logos have been the Punjab National Bank and Welcome Group. Now we have a list of 7 Young Indian Graphic Designers who are changing the meaning of graphic designing by blowing a breath of fresh air into Indian design scenario.
This 30-year-old has been making rounds in the online world of the country and has been carving his name on many famous online spaces. This NIFT designing graduate has begun working back in 2010 and worked on Bollywood posters for the first time. He has designed famous poster campaigns for MTV Roadies and Rang De Basanti in the B Town sphere. He began his own pet project late in 2012 named “Tweetard”, an ironic satire on the various negative shades of social media. His cover of Hindustan Times Brunch was an extension of this. He has worked with over 90 magazines. His earlier ventures were with Comic Con India, DSYN’s Happily Unmarried and three years at Zomato. He then began working with All India Bakchod as a social media manager but is now back with Zomato.
Chennai-based Gopinath is well known for being a successful designer of logos, branding and social media campaigns for a few international brands. His journey began from being a web designer for many media groups. He developed almost 11 websites with their 11 publications. He headed a team of10 talented designers for a company in Chennai to develop several games for multi-national companies right from scratch. Inspired by Apple’s iWatch, Gopinath developed iBangle as a conceptual design. The design was named “Tomorrow’s Coolest Design” by CNN and Yanko Design’s named it as one of their Top 50 Product Designs of 2011 listicle. Apart from being a corporate communications wiz, Gopinath has been actively designing posters for Kollywood. Few important names being OK Kanmani, Raja Rani, Aaranya Kaandam, Vaayai Moodi Pesavum and Kathi.
With over eight years of industrial experience behind him, Madhukar has been making strides in the designing world since the industry began to shoot up. A creative individual, well-versed in codes of HTML, CBT, WBT and Flash websites has Identity design, brochure designing, packaging design, web designing, screen savers and flash films to his portfolio. He has been working as a corporate communication specialist and IBM pvt. ltd. He leads the branding team and majority of his work comes down to designing printable corporate communication materials like brochures, posters, notes, emails, mail-casts etc. he then joined Pankhudi, an NGO for the underprivileged students. He has worked on several projects for Yahoo, Sun Microsystems, Oracle, IBM, ACT, Infosys, Toyota Kirloskar Motors, Mico Bosch etc.
A veteran designer, Sujata co-founded the renowned designing firm Ray and Keshavan in 1989. Sujata has a degree of design from the School of Art, Yale University in 1987. A recurring face in many international conferences on design in countries like Japan, Africa and Russia, she was also a jury member at Rebrand 100, Rhode Island school of design and more. She was placed on 18 in Fortune India’s most powerful women list in 2011. This Eastern Press Award receiver happens to be the only Indian designer who was honored twice with Graphic Designer of the Year at Annual Advertising and Marketing. She has designed some outstanding logos like the Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport, Bengaluru International Airport, Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport Mumbai and Vistara Aitlines.
The Indian born Denmark settled designer is the reason behind Chumbak’s success. The famous accessories brand was a front runner in bringing the funky Indian culture based designs- essentially doodles. She worked with Chumbak as an illustrator after a rather illustrious career at Lucid Design as the head designer, graphic designer at Animal and Visionary Schoolmen at Singapore. For a month, she has worked with Warner Brothers as a character designer too. Her focus majorly lies in illustrations and typography which she handles with style. She featured in Photoshop’s 25 Under 25 list in the USA.
Graduated from Sir J J School of Art, Sunit happens to have created the cleanest and clutter-free website that has set benchmarks for other designers to look up for. The website being Cleartrip. His skills of UI/UX design are well displayed in the code written for Cleartrip. He has his post-graduation degree from Industrial Design Center, IIT Bombay. His early ventures were being a branding designer at Burrp and online graphic designer at Yahoo!. He is known to have created impressive corporate stationary at both the places.
This Mumbai based graphic designer is a masters from National institute of Design. She is the founder of design house Studio Kohl which is a boutique studio offering graphic design services grounded in a rigorous practice of image-making, connecting art and design. She has also worked as a trainer with Deloitte India and Sony India to create exclusive designs and arts.
Her personal interests lie in Indian ethnic arts and designs. Her designs are quirky with a generous touch of bright colors which very much reflects her personality.
